Amber Sea Mile 2010”
On October 9 at 13.00 in a unique nature corner – in Smiltynė (Smiltynės str. 13, at the sports and health
base) a cannon shot shall announce the beginning of the ninth traditional international race – “Amber Sea
Mile 2010”. This is the XXI century’s sports and health project: race for everybody – for the big and small,
professional runners and beginners. At the same time an open Lithuanian cross championship and junior
competition will take place.
According to the organizers of the event the best place to run nautical mile is our wonderful Smiltyne.
The participants feel the spirit of the sea and the port already by getting on the other side by a ferry. Sport
and Health base is the start and the finish. There is a stone commemorating the winners near the ferry and next to the track.
The circle of 3 nautical miles (men master 2 laps) is never altered and will not be in the future, thus
records are fixed in distances of 3 and 6 nautical miles.
The track begins in the Sport and Health base, continues along the dunes, to the beat of the sea waves.
The coating of the track: 60 % – asphalt, 35 % – forest ground, 5 % – sand of the beach. The landscape of the track is hilly. All participants are recommended to wear running shoes.
ABOUT THE EVENT
“Amber nautical mile” is the sport and health project of the XXI century – International Running Competition created by SE Klaipeda State Seaport Authority and the federation of Klaipeda County. The organizers seek that inhabitants of Klaipeda city and region together with the runners of neighbor states covered the distance of nautical mile – 1852 metres. Professional men runners are suggested to cover 6 miles and women runners 3 miles. The name of the winners are inscribed into the stone memory. This stone with the weight of 6 tons was taken from the bottom of the seabed when the water territory was dredged. All participants, who complete the distance, get certificate.
Besides quite a number of runners are awarded with souvenirs of “Amber nautical mile”.
The three and six sea miles routes are permanent and records are registered. The three miles route record was beat six times. The best result was reached in 2009 by an Lithuanian runner Rasa Drazdauskaitė – 18.56, she won special prize – 1852 Lt.
Men have managed to beat the six sea miles route record twice. The best result was reached in 2006 by an Estonian runner Pavel Loskutov – 34.38.
